Our History
J. Alex Swift Ltd was established in 1895 by John Alexander Swift in the village of Hathern where it remains today. The sock dynasty is now being looked after by the 4th generation of the Swift family. With over 130 years of knowledge and experience comes an incomparable expertise. There is a lot of history amongst the factory walls and while we value tradition we keep on innovating.
This is how we have remained a respected company in the British hosiery industry for so long. None the less, a couple of things haven’t changed – the pride we take in our work, the exquisite quality of our products or the satisfaction of our customers.
More than "just socks"
For us, a sock isn't just a piece of clothing — it's a job to be done properly, whatever that job is. We design and knit for football and cricket teams, so they can stand comfortably through a full match. Our piper and kilt hose help keep Scottish heritage alive. Walking and shooting socks are built to handle the outdoors, whatever the weather. And when it's time to switch off, our alpaca bedsocks are about as warm as socks get.
Different socks, different jobs — but the same care and the same quality go into every pair.
Ahead of the alpaca craze
Around 30 years ago, the factory took a real gamble: knitting socks from alpaca fibre. It was a risk on two fronts. Alpaca was barely known in the UK at the time — not something you'd find on the high street — and it's an expensive yarn to work with. Getting it right was harder than it sounds, too. A sock has to work much harder than a jumper: it takes constant pressure and rubbing from both foot and shoe, so the yarn has to hold its shape and stand up to wear in a way that alpaca hadn't really been tested for before.
It took time to get it right. We now have our alpaca specially spun for us in South America, to a specification that holds up to what a sock actually demands. The decision was driven by Neil Swift, who ran the factory at the time alongside his cousin Ian. Neil has since retired, and Ian now runs the business — but three decades on, alpaca remains one of our most-loved materials, soft, warm, and still not something most people expect to find in a pair of socks.
Old machines, new machines, one factory
We're proud to be one of the UK's leading manufacturers of mohair and alpaca socks. Our factory runs on traditional double-cylinder machines — some of which have been knitting since the 1960s and haven't missed a beat — alongside newer machinery from Italy and Japan. We take advantage of the best of both worlds: decades of mechanical know-how paired with modern precision. Many of our socks are also hand-linked, a traditional finishing technique that gives a smoother, more comfortable seam than machine linking alone.
Materials we trust
We take care sourcing our yarns — natural fibres like alpaca, wool, cashmere, and mohair, chosen for warmth, comfort, and durability rather than fashion. Where we can, we choose British wool — keeping the supply chain close to home, the same way we always have. It's not just a piece of clothing to us; it's something worth doing properly, and we knit that care into every pair.
